Bands We Love Wrap Up 2013
BYT at large | Dec 17, 2013 | 10:30AM |

2013 is rapidly coming to a close, and we didn’t think there was anyone better to wrap up the music scene for us than the bands we LOVE LOVE LOVE. As such, we posed a series of questions to our favorites, ft. Luara Burhenn (The Mynabirds), AVAN LAVA, Erika Spring (Au Revoir Simone), Paul Hammer (Savoir Adore), GEMS, Josh Ocean (Ghost Beach), OOFJ, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, Carmen Villain, Julia Kwamya (GERMANS), Spirit Animal, Claire, Parade of Lights, The Julie Ruin AND J. Roddy and the Business. So, without further adieu, you’ve got the 2013 music rundown from the mouths of the experts:

Laura Burhenn – The Mynabirds / Postal Service reunion

What was your personal favorite moment of your 2013 music career?

Playing the Colbert Report with the Postal Service. Being on that show at all is such an incredible experience and honor. But the fact it was Stephen’s first show back after his mother passed away and he gave such an incredibly touching tribute to her and to lives-well-lived made it unspeakably perfect. Oh, and Paul McCartney was the previous guest, so my signature is forever touching Paul’s signature through two pages pressed together. I am basically eternally making out with a Beatle.

Which new record you had on repeat in 2013 and why?

Paracosm by Washed Out. I did a lot of vision-questing and driving in the later part of this year (drove from Omaha to the Atlantic Ocean, back to Omaha, then across the Rockies all the way to the Pacific), and that record is the perfect driving record. It took me back to being 16 and feeling free with my brand new license and the open road before me, My Bloody Valentine and New Order blasting out of my car stereo and out through the open windows. Absolute freedom!

Which older record you kept coming back to in 2013 and why?

Songs from the Big Chair by Tears for Fears. The production in that record is unrivaled and feels unbelievably fresh all these years later. I also love that these gorgeous, perfect pop songs come from these deep emotional struggles they were tackling.

What song do you wish you had written in on 2013 and why?

Probably HAIM’s The Wire. It’s so catchy and fresh! I love those girls and all the love they have for each other.

Best live show of 2013?

Big Freedia! They toured with the Postal Service for a bit, and I absolutely fell in love. Freedia is one of the most gracious musicians I’ve ever met, full of so much love for New Orleans and gratefulness for all the attention and opportunities come her way. And her dancers are just incredible.

Who is your current music crush?

Esme Patterson, this adorable singer-songwriter from Denver. We met and immediately fell in love at this music summit a few weeks ago. We were drawn together immediately like soul sisters who would dance around in horse ponchos and write songs about constellation mythologies if we had our choice. She has this hilarious side girl rap project called HARPOONTANG, which is pretty incredible. I love a woman with voice of a songbird, a brain that’ll bowl you over, and a sense of humor to match it all.

Who should we keep an eye out for in 2014?

NO. I sang on their cover of Leonard Cohen’s Suzanne, which will come out in January of next year. Their debut album (out on Arts and Crafts in February) is pretty flawless.

The future is…

WILD. Let go and let it take you where it will!

AVAN LAVA

What was your personal favorite moment of your 2013 music career?

Every show is special to us.  But, we just had a chance to play a few dates in Europe and that is feeling like the highlight right now. The style and swag of the parisians was insanely impressive.

Which new record you had on repeat in 2013 and why?

Ciara – Ciara

This album is sexy.  In NYC you’re rarely alone, and this always seems like the right thing to throw on with friends.

Which older record you kept coming back to in 2013 and why?

Daft punk Alive 1997

Can never listen to this enough. When random access memories came out I took a listen back through the catalog and got STUCK on this…  AGAIN.

What song do you wish you had written in on 2013 and why?

Drake “Hold on we’re going home”

This song has the sexiness of a house beat circa the French wave of 2007 and pours R&B on top.   It feels great.

Alt J’s “Awesome Wave” (not that old, but continued listening to it so much this year.)

OOFJ

What was your personal favorite moment of your 2013 music career?

When our debut album came out in April. It had been a long time underway, traveling between Africa, Europe and LA  whilst constructing it. Finally we got to see the heat sensitive ink on the vinyl cover that had been made in Amsterdam that we compulsively boast about  (shout out to our designer Hannes Bernard!).

Which new record you had on repeat in 2013 and why?

None… Kind of. We have been in seclusion. We hear bits and pieces, songs off albums. But it’s hard making new music and listening to other stuff.. specially to dig into new stuff and really wallow in it.

Which older record you kept coming back to in 2013 and why?

Jens: Rachmaninovs  2nd piano concerto with Gary Graffman, Leonard Bernstein and New York Philharmonics.
Because it’s insanely beautiful and dramatic music that fits any kind of mood.

Katherine: Um, Nico stuff like The End album and Michael Franks Passion Fruit. Nico because of her medieval melodies and strangeness. Which are groovy and religious in someway. I like that. Michael Franks because it comforts me, and also it’s like a summer vacation of fruit and glitter on a table of an 80’s I never knew.

Best live show of 2013?

Atoms For Peace. HollyWood Bowl.
Music was amazing. Killed it.

Who is your musical crush?

Katherine: You never say your crush out loud! Otherwise a fairy dies.

What song do you wish you had written in on 2013 and why?

Jens:  I wish I had written Nosaj Thing / Eclipse blue, because the vibe of the song is very soft and sexy.
I have a hard time listening to it because it makes me feel inferior.

Katherine: These New Puritans, ” The Light In Your Name.” Incredible romanticism, very big and very fragile.

Who should we keep an eye out for in 2014?

Keep and eye out for our friends in The Late Great Fitzcarraldos who are working on their next album right now.

The future is….

EXISTENTIAL CATASTROPHE. Jokes.
Actually our 2nd album comes out.

Katherine: I hate talking about time.

Jens: Time is nothing.

J.RODDY WALSTON AND THE BUSINESS

What was your personal favorite moment of your 2013 music career?

Headlining 930 club was an amazing moment. If you have been in a band on the east coast the idea of playing the 9:30 Club is a major benchmark.
Also performing on the Late Show with David Letterman was also amazing.

Which new record you had on repeat in 2013 and why?

Vampire Weekend, Modern Vampires of the City.
I love the songs. I love the production. I think the lyrics are risky and challenging. Pretty rare record in this era of music.

Which older record you kept coming back to in 2013 and why?

Iggy pop, Lust for Life.
It is one of the most important rock albums ever and I can’t believe I have just fallen in love with it this year. I am embarrassed really. It makes me feel insane when I listen to it.

What song do you wish you had written in 2013 and why?

Lyrically Jason Isbell’s “Elephant” is pretty destructive.

Best live show of 2013?

Sports bar with Warren Hixson at Empire in Richmond, VA.

Who is your current music crush?

I have an eternal passion for Shovels and Rope!

Who should we keep an eye out for in 2014

Richmond VA bands! Richmond is the most untapped/underrated music scene in the country. I love it here.
Everywhere I go there are amazing bands, including:

Matthew E White
The Head and the Heart
The Trillions
Sports Bar
White laces
No BS Brass Band
Black Girls
Avers
Hyper Color
Warren Hixon

The future is…

Myspace.

GERMANS (Julia Kwamya)

What was your personal favorite moment of your 2013 music career?

My career just started this year! It’s been amazing to receive the support of music lovers and industry people alike. People I would never expect to be fans of GERMANS are. It’s great. Also I get to work with one of my favorite musicians. Kurt Feldman (winter station studio/ the ice choir) produces my music.

Which new record you had on repeat in 2013 and why?

“Under the Rose” from the album Stealth of Days by Jensen Sportag.

I was recently introduced to the music of Jensen Sportag in February. I heard their EP “Pure Wet” after looking for some tracks for a DJ gig. I was instantly hooked. After doing some sleuthing I realized that they’re  on the label Cascine that my friend Jeff runs. So I asked him (bothered him. Haha) to send me their new album! I’ve literally been listening to “Under the Rose” everyday since the summer.

Which older record you kept coming back to in 2013 and why?

“Pale Shelter” by Tears for Fears from the album The Hurting. I love this track so much. Probably because I ask myself these kind of questions everyday.

What song do you wish you had written in on 2013 and why?

Duh. “Get Lucky”. Haha the most Hype song on the face of 2013. Well “Blurred Lines” is a close 2nd. But I wouldn’t put my stamp on that.

Best live show….

Local Natives put on a seriously tight and energetic show at T-5 recently.

Who is your current music crush?

DORNIK ! I’m curious to see what his album is like. “Something about you” is such a simple and divine track.

The future is….

So curious.

What song do you wish you had written in 2013 and why?

Thou shalt not covet…

Best live show of 2013?

If we’re talking the moment I was closest to crapping myself it has to be the pyrotechnics for The Killers at Barclays. I couldn’t tell if the building was on fire and we were all going to die or if the chorus had dropped.

Who is your current music crush?

Jesse Woods

What was your personal favorite moment of your 2013 music career?

Anthony: Driving to LA and hearing our song “We’re The Kids” debut on Alt Nation’s #Alt18

Michelle: Opening to a sold out crowd for Fitz and the Tantrums at the Wiltern in LA.

Randy: The video shoot for We’re the Kids was awesome! There were so many creative minds involved in making it burst to life, it was exciting to be a part of and watch it all come together.

Which new record you had on repeat in 2013 and why?

Anthony: School of Seven Bells. It’s pretty rare these days how an artist is able to put you in a dream like state instantly. For me SVIIB does with “Ghostory” & “Put Your Sad Down EP”. Ryan turned me on to these guys and I literally had the song “Love Play” on repeat for 8 hrs. I’m obsessed with their brand of soaring shoegaze pop.

Michelle: The 1975′s self-titled album because their melodies are so incredibly fun to sing, I randomly will sing a line while loading gear or something, and I’m a complete sucker for awesome synth basslines.

Randy: I haven’t really had any new music on repeat, I have a lot of older albums that I love that are always in rotation. When I’m not listening to those I have the radio on, There is a lot of great music being spun that’s been catching my ear

Which older record you kept coming back to in 2013 and why?

Anthony: Ryan Adams “Love Is Hell Part 1”. There’s always a record that brings you back to a certain time in your life. “Avalanche” and “The Shadowlands” give me the chills every time I listen and sets the mood for a late night drive in the city, rain falling and where anything is possible.

Michelle: I will never get over Sigur Ros’ ( ) album. It’s like a musical mood ring that I listen to whenever I need to think or decompress. It’s optimistic and haunting at the same time. Because it’s sung in a made-up language, I’ll sometimes fill in lyrics with what I want.

Randy: I still keep putting on Nirvana Nevermind. From the first track to the last and back again, it’s just one of those albums you can’t compare to another.

What song do you wish you had written in on 2013 and why?

Anthony: Zedd “Clarity”.  If you played this song stripped down on guitar it would still be good. I’m amazed at how Zedd and Foxes came up with a meaningful chorus melody, added EDM and shoegaze elements while keeping it Top 40.

Michelle: “The Mother We Share” by Chvrches because of it’s futuristic take on the 80’s. I love the way the vocal accents envelope the listener.

Randy: The Neighbourhood’s Sweater Weather. That song has been stuck in my head since I first heard it on the radio. I haven’t heard anything like them before and it was really refreshing to hear a band like that on the radio.

Best live show you saw in 2013?

Anthony: We’ve been holed up in the studio a lot this year. The only shows we’re able to see are the bands we play with. We recently opened up for 30 Seconds To Mars and their live set is both anthemic and full of energy.

Michelle: So hard to pick, but I think 30 Seconds to Mars are amazing live, they’re so good at engaging fans.

Randy: I haven’t had any opportunities to go to any shows in a while With how busy things have been I tend to play more shows than I go to.

Who is your current music crush?

Anthony: I’ll have to say it’s still School of Seven Bells. “Ghostory” & “Put Your Sad Down EP” are still on repeat 🙂

Michelle: Chvrches, I get excited whenever I see them doing anything, really.

Randy: Bastille, I have really been digging that song Pompeii. Definitely going to explore that record.

Who should we keep an eye out for in 2014?

Anthony: I think Smallpools is a band to look out for. If their EP is a sign of things to come then I can’t wait for their full length.

Michelle: I would love to hear more from NONONO. Stina’s voice is dream-like, and they write great pop melodies.

Randy: Parade of Lights, I hear they are alright. 😉
